A fertilizer is any material that provides nutrients to plants. They can be classified as Organic, Chemical, Inorganic, and Soil Amendment. They contain macronutrients and micronutrients that plants need for optimum health and growth. The percentage of elements in a container of fertilizer that are immediately available, are usually expressed as the NPK(nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) The remainder of the material in the fertilizer container consists of filler or other elements in the compounds with the nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium that are not immediately available to plants.

Nitrogen is a macronutrient that is a major component of plant cells and a component of chlorophyll. Nitrogen deficiency symptoms include lower leaves that turn yellow, a plant that is yellowish or pale green overall, and stunted growth.

Phosphorus is a macronutrient that is a major component of genetic material in plants and is used in various biochemical processes. Plants that are deficient in phosphorus have red, purple, or very dark green leaves and stunted growth.

Potassium, potash is a macro nutrient that is found in plant proteins, carbohydrates, and chlorophyll. Plants that are deficient in potassium are weak-stemmed and develop lower leaves that have yellowish tips and edges that eventually turn brown.
