Timing: Starts seeds indoors in mid to late spring, and transplant or direct sow with the arrival of warm weather. Basil does not thrive below 10°C (50°F).
Seeding: Sow seeds 1cm (1/2") deep and keep moist until seeds germinate. Thin or transplant to 15-20cm (6-8") apart.
Growing: Basil is a heat loving plant that should be grown in full sun. Try it in containers, raised beds, or mixed with other annual herbs. Wherever basil is planted, the soil should be fertile, humus-rich, and drain freely. Once the plants are 15cm (6") tall, pinch the growing tip to encourage bushier growth. Harvest basil plants before cold weather sets in. Leaves can be dried or frozen in ice cube trays. Basil flowers are edible and full of flavour.
Seed Specs: Usual seed life: 3 years.
