This early maturing variety has medium green, firm, button-like sprouts that are evenly spaced and well formed. Gustus is noted for fine flavour and for sprouts forming high up the stalk. Allow lots of space for the big plants to grow.
Approx. 25 seeds
Timing: Start Brussels sprouts indoors late spring to early summer. Transplant to the garden by mid-summer so the plants are in the ground for 45-60 days before the first hard frost.
Seeding: Place 3-4 seeds in each 8cm (3") pot. Sow seeds 5mm (1/4") deep. After a few weeks, thin to the strongest plant.
Growing: Mix 1/4 cup of balanced organic fertilizer under each transplant. Transplants should be set out by the time they have 6-8 true leaves. Space 45-60cm (18-24") apart in row 75-90cm (30-36") apart. Larger, older transplants are more likely to bolt when exposed to cool temperatures in the garden.
