West Coast Seeds Imperial Star Artichoke Seeds
Hardy, large plants that produce 7 to 8 highly uniform, nearly spineless buds in the first season. The buds are sweet and tender. A great choice for home gardens or open field production. Plants grow 0.9-1.2m (3-4') tall. 85-90 days, OP.
Approx. 25 seeds
Timing: Start transplant indoors January to February under bright lights, 8-10 weeks before last frost.
Seeding: Sow 2 seeds per pot 5mm (1/4") deep. Keep moist, in a warm place, until seeds germinate in 10-21 days, depending on soil temperature. Transplant strongest seedlings about 2 weeks before the last frost. Artichokes need a cool period - 250 hours below 10°C (50°F) - before they flower, but they will not survive frost. Set plants 90-120cm (36-48") apart in rows 180cm (72") apart.
Growing: Artichokes are heavy feeders that require lots of moisture for maximum growth. Add lime and fertilizer before transplanting. Grow in well drained, fertile soil. The ideal pH range is 5.6 to 6.6.
Seed Specs: Canada No. 1 germination standard: 75%. usual seed life: 1 year.
