West Coast Seeds Sugar Baby Certified Organic Melon Seeds
This classic heirloom icebox type melon dates back to 1959. Sugar Baby has a thin, hard, distinctly striped rind that becomes almost black at maturity. The firm, sweet, juicy flesh is reddish orange with small black, apple-like seeds. 82 days, OP.
Approx. 20 seeds
Timing: Start seeds indoors or in a greenhouse 2-3 weeks after the last frost date. Transplant when seedlings are 5 weeks old, once the soil has warmed up.
Seeding: Sow 2cm (1") deep. Use bottom heat to speed germination.
Growing: Melon plants need 8-10 weeks of good, hot growing weather from the middle of summer. Anything you can do to increase soil and air temperature will help. Clear or black plastic mulch will absorb a lot of useful heat into the soil. Melons do not ripen off the vine, so leave them intact even into early autumn if necessary. Ripe cantaloupes will easily detach from the vine with light finger pressure. Watermelons are ripe when the tendril nearest the druit is dry.
Seed Specs: Canada No. 1 germination rate: 80%. Usual seed life: 3 years.
