Timing: Start indoors in late winter for spring transplants, or direct sow from spring to summer for fall and winter harvests. Optimal soil temperature for germination: 10-30°C (50-85°F).
Seeding: Sow a few seeds 5mm (1/4") deep in small pots and thin to the strongest one when the seedlings are about 5cm (2") tall. Collards do not require heat to germinate. It should take 7-10 days for the seeds to sprout.
Growing: Space 45-60cm (18-24") apart in rows 75-90cm (30-36") apart. Larger, older transplants are more likely to bolt when exposed to cool temperatures in the garden. Plant in highly fertile, well drained soil with organic matter added.
