West Coast Seeds Walla Walla Onion Seeds
The classic onion of the Pacific Northwest. The very large, flattened bulbs are mild and juicy. Plant in the spring or in August to overwinter. Spring-planted bulbs are not as mild as are fall sown ones. 150 days (summer) 300 days (winter), OP.
Approx. 245 seeds
Timing: For the largest bulbs, start indoors in mid- to late winter. Transplant into the garden 6-8 weeks later in mid-spring. Harvest when tops start to fall down at the end of summer. Optimal soil temperature for germination: 21-25°C (70-75°F).
Seeding: Sow seeds 5mm-1cm (1/4-1/2") deep. Transplant 12-15cm (5-6") apart in rows 45-75cm (18-30") apart.
Growing: Fertile, well-drained soil is best. Add well-rotted manure or compost and dig 1/2-1 cup balanced organic fertilizer into each 3m (10') of row. Keep high moisture level in the top 20-30 cm (8-12") of soil. Most of the bub should form on the surface of the soil, so don't transplant too deeply. Bulb size is dependent on the size of the tops: the bigger the tops, the bigger the bulb.
