Timing: Start indoors in spring and transplant in 5-6 weeks. Start winter harvest kale in mid-summer, transplanting in August. Alternatively, direct sow at 3 week intervals from spring to summer. Optimal soil temperature for germination: 10-30°C (50-85°F).
Seeding: Sow 4 or 5 seeds, 5mm (1/4") deep, and thin to the strongest plant. Space transplants 30-45cm (12-18") apart in rows 75-90cm (30-36") apart.
Growing: Kale prefers well-drained, fertile soil, high in organic matter, with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8. In regions with heavy rainfall, an early spring application of lime is recommended. Mix 1/4 cup of balanced organic fertilizer into the soil beneath each transplant. Keep the kale bed evenly moist for best results.
